The picture above overlooks the new roof GroupXL recently installed on a garage in Delavan, WI. Ordinarily, a garage re-roof would be an easy story to tell with little significance. But what we found ‘under the cover’ of the previous roof made this a very interesting tale.
Upon examination, we found there was extensive damage to the roof’s plywood sheathing as well as marginal damage to the wood rafters as you can see from the following pictures.
As you can see (picture to the right), we found there was extensive moisture damage and even some mold on some of the plywood sheathing.
After we removed that plywood (as you can see from the picture to the left) we also found some moisture damage to the supporting rafters. This concerned us. However, we did not feel the damage was severe enough to necessitate removal and replacement of the affected rafters.
Instead, our remedy was to attach
We then replaced the plywood sheathing and proceeded with the re-roof work. First we installed GAF FeltBuster® underlayment. This synthetic felt if effective in preventing wind driven rain from getting under the shingles and damaging the garage’s structure and inside.
New aluminum drip edge and aprons were installed along the gutters. Then new GAF shingles were laid in place followed by two new roof vents and a ridge cap.
All in all, the new roof and the supports should last for years.
