We recently finished this beautiful 14 foot by 16 foot elevated deck on the rear of a Lake Geneva, WI home. A striking contrast was made with the light grey deck against the white railing and lattice work below the deck itself.
The material used was composite, which is extremely durable and requires little maintenance other than cleaning with soap and water occasionally. The environment impact of composite materials versus wood decks is reduced since they are manufactured from recycled plastic and scrap wood. Many options as to colors and grain pattern choices are available for the homeowner’s selection.
The deck was laid out, as shown in the image on the left. The existing concrete steps were removed and later hauled away. We needed to attach the deck to the home to anchor it, so siding along the house was removed and also hauled away. Some sod was cut and removed along with the dirt.
We sunk seven deck footings 50” deep to adhere to the frost penetration guidelines for our region. At this depth, the ground acts as an insulation barrier to prevent moisture from freezing during the winter months.
We installed the deck with a 4 foot wide staircase and a concrete pad was furnished to support it. It was trimmed in white railing and lattice.
