Tribune Article | Popularity of Solar Growing in Illinois

Last week’s article “Solar power popularity growing in Illinois, despite obstacles” discusses the impact Illinois’ Future Energy Jobs Act has had on the expansion of solar energy systems. This act subsidizes replaceable energy and is meant to accelerate the growth of both solar and wind energy in our state.

The article does point out some obstacles but some important points it makes include:

By the year 2025 25% of all electric power is mandated to come from renewable sources. However, wind, solar and other renewable sources not consist of merely 4% of power. The remainder comes from coal, gas and nuclear sources.

Installation costs have decreased. This along with federal tax credits and state subsidies (as well as lower electric bills) make installation of residential rooftop solar energy systems more attractive to homeowners.

Note: Federal tax credits remain at 30% through 2019 contracts but decrease to 26% next year, 22% in 2021 and then 10%.

ComEd estimates that there are about 4,500 solar customers, twice the number of last year. Most of them are residential.

Note: A guide to estimating the cost, savings and payback of installing a residential solar rooftop energy system is available online at CopmEd by clicking on https://secure.comed.com/MyGeneration/. You can actually see you home from above!

GroupXL strongly recommends you consider installing solar roofing along with your new roof and purchasing rather than leasing the solar equipment.
